Question:
What do you contribute most to the success of the Wellness
Weight-loss program?
Krista: I believe that our program is successful
because of the coaching system that we have developed.
We take a personal approach with each client by getting
to know them and finding out what they need. We discover
exactly where they are in terms of their current eating
and exercise habits and beliefs. Then, we take baby
steps in the direction of their goal. Our primary objective
is to help them bridge the gap between knowing and doing.
I know what I am saying may seem obvious, but please
understand that it is more detailed than this. It is
the words we use and the approach we take that makes
what we do different and an empowering experience for
our clients.
Question:
What are some of the differences between Wellness Weight-Loss
and programs like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig?
Krista: There are several differences between
the aforementioned programs and Wellness Weight-Loss.
We teach people how to eat healthy with real food and
we take into consideration cultural diversity. We do
not use a point system or sell pre-packaged food. Instead
we educate people how to make beneficial choices with
the food they purchase at the grocery store or order
at a restaurant. We do not promote expensive supplements
or pills, excessive amounts of protein or advocate any
controversial resistance training exercises. We take
a wellness approach to fat-loss by improving health
on the inside and out. We do however provide our clients
with a personalized exercise program based on their
goals and interests. And we coach our clients to a permanent
lifestyle change through the use of specific tools,
education, coaching psychology and self-esteem building
techniques.
Question:
Do you work with families or just individuals?
Krista: We do all of the above. It is important
for children to be educated on proper nutrition and
exercise as young as possible. Imagine if we could establish
healthy habits before unhealthy habits are formed!
It is a fact that over 70 percent of all children have
some form of hardening of the arteries by the age of
twelve. This is a staggering statistic! Also, now more
than ever, kids are developing type-two diabetes. This
use to be a disease that only affected adults. More
children are obese than ever before. We believe in prevention
and working closely with families and couples to teach
them how to walk the wellness way!
Question:
Is your program specifically geared toward losing weight?
Krista: Absolutely not! We take a wellness approach
to weight-loss because of our interest in disease prevention.
In a society where people are chasing the cure, we are
most interested in the cause of illnesses. We strongly
believe that many of todays killers coronary heart
disease, cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes can be prevented
through exercise, healthy eating habits and the psychosomatic
network. Taking a wellness approach to life will result
in releasing excess body weight, increasing more energy
and experiencing a healthier body composition.
Question:
Why do you think so many people are overweight in America?
Krista: I believe that there are a number of
reasons. First of all, it starts in grade school. Physical
education use to be an integral part of the schools
curriculum. Today, exercise tends to be optional. I
believe that we need to educate our children about the
benefits of proper nutrition and exercise, as well as
the negative effects of sugar, saturated and trans fat
and sedentary lifestyles. On top of all this, I think
that people are so busy that they opt for a quick fix
instead of taking the time to plan healthy meals for
the family. Most people tend to go for convenience over
healthy alternatives. As the focus for more things
increases, so does our weight. One of the unfortunate
outcomes of this industrial age is the negative affect
on our health.
Question:
With all of the clients you work with on an individual
basis, what have you found to be the common factor for
why they gained excess body fat?
Krista: The one common factor of weight gain
would have to be attributed to a change in activity
level. More often than not our clients went from an
active lifestyle to one of less activity. When asked
what happened it seemed to be triggered by some sort
of event like the loss of a loved one, divorce, new
job, or having a child. Whatever their reason, they
continued to eat the same amount of food, yet decreased
their activity level. One of the things that I find
intriguing is that many women blame childbirth for their
current state of obesity. I believe that it wasnt necessarily
the weight-gain during pregnancy, but the lack of physical
activity and time for themselves after they had the
baby. I remember my mother saying, I was thin until
I had all of you. With that I would reply, Didnt
you stop working out then too? [laughter]
Question:
What are some of the challenges clients face when
implementing new habits?
Krista: Changing habits can be a difficult process.
The biggest challenge that I have discovered is the
tendency to judge oneself. Many people are too hard
on themselves. Rather than evaluating their current
habits and behaviors, clients tend to pass judgment.
They say things like, I dont like myself, I am lazy,
I was bad this week, or I shouldnt look this way.
All of these statements instill a negative emotional
charge on the client. That usually causes them to feel
displeased with themselves, guilty and even resentful.
As long as they continue to judge themselves, they will
remain stagnant, and may even take a step backward.
As their coach, I bring this to their attention and
help the client re-word these statements. During the
personal coaching sessions we focus on evaluating their
progress and offer praise for any positive changes that
they have made in their life.
Question:
What type of professionals have you worked with?
Krista: We have worked with nurses, doctors,
nutritionists, professional athletes, realtors, financial
executives, nurses, personal trainers and on and on.
It doesn't matter what the profession. People are people
and we all have individual challenges. It may be finances,
organization skills or excess body fat. Being overweight
does not exclude anyone.
Question:
What is the secret to your being able to help people
get the weight off permanently?
Krista: As you may already know, everyone is
well informed. There are thousands of diet books and
hundreds of magazines preaching what is right and wrong.
Our secret is discovered in our coaching system and
you would have to become a client to learn about the
intricacies. However, it is the constant reinforcement
that we provide that makes all the difference.
