Question:
Should I worry about the type of protein I eat or will any
protein do the job?
Answer:
When consuming protein it is impotant to be aware of the saturated
fat content. For example, a 4 oz. sirloin steak has approximately
20 grams of saturated fat, while a 4 oz. chicken breast has
only 1-3 grams of saturated fat. Pork is way off the chart
at a wopping 30-70 grams of saturated fat (depending on the
cut). We recommend no more than 10 grams of saturated fat
per day.
Some
of the most healthy protein sources are fish, chicken or turkey
breast, egg whites, low fat cottage cheese, protein shakes
that are low in sugar, and many soy products.
When
it comes to how much protein, we recommend .5 to 1 gram of
protein per pound of lean body mass--depending on your goals
and activity level. To assess your lean body mass you will
need to find out your current body composition.
