Question:
I like cheese and wanted to know how much is too much? What
cheese is best from a health point of view?
Answer:
Most cheese is higher in saturated fat per ounce than beef
or pork. Saturated fat is the kind that clogs our arteries
and leads to heart attacks and strokes. For obvious health
reasons, we recommend no more that 10 grams of saturated fat
per day. With most cheese that is about 2 ounces. Bear in
mind that you still have all of the other sources of saturated
fat in your diet. If you choose to eat 2 oz. of cheese per
day, that doesn't leave you much room or any other animal
products.
The
lowest fat cheeses are partly skim mozzarella, ricota, and
low fat cottage cheese. Soy cheese is a healthy alternative
as it has unsaturated fat (the heart healthy fat). If you
think of cheese as a fat source instead of protein, it makes
more sense to eat it in moderation. Hope this isn't too disappointing!
